Freeride skiing in the Pyrenees

Freeride skiing in Grand Tourmalet Pic du Midi is awesome! Right in the heart of the Pyrenees, have the time of your life on the ungroomed slopes of the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees, in legendary off-piste spots like Aygues Cluses and, of course, the vast freeride descent at the Pic du Midi de Bigorre. Savour the serenity conveyed by the panoramic view and the big thrill of freeride skiing, draw your best imprint in the powder, surrounded by snow-capped peaks: enjoy the Pyrenees in free mode!

A freeride skiing paradise

Freeriders from all walks of life find their paradise at the Pic du Midi: one of the most breathtaking off-piste experiences in the Pyrenees, listed as one of the top 50 freeriding sites in the world*! And it usually has excellent snow cover and sun conditions.

Take the cable car from the La Mongie resort, and this high-mountain area is all yours! From the belvedere over the yrenees, at the top of the Pic du Midi, you have two alternatives:

on the La Mongie slope, the “La Coume du Pic” itinerary with a 1,400-metre elevation change over a 10-km descent all the way to Artigues-Campan. To get back to the resort, take the freeriders shuttle bus which goes up to La Mongie (remember to book at the cable car departure terminal).

> the south-facing Barèges slope offers an elevation change of 1,500 metres all the way to the Tourmalet chairlift which will take you to the La Mongie resort (lift included in the Pic Unlimited pass).

If you prefer, you can stop at the intermediate cable car terminal (Le Taoulet, 2,341 m) to try out the Yellow, Green or Purple pistes. Continuations of the Pic du Midi descent, these itineraries are less physically demanding.

Do you want even more?

From the resort, you will find a whole host of options for freeride itineraries. Off-piste enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the famous Vallée d’Aygues Cluses and its outstanding views of the Massif du Néouvielle. This itinerary doesn’t present any major difficulties for experienced skiers and offers spectacular landscapes. You follow the superb turns of the GR10 all the way to Barèges. To get to this off-piste itinerary, you take the chairlift then walk for around 20 minutes. Other freeride skiing itineraries, accessible from the ski lifts or after a short walk, are just waiting for you including the superb Combe des Dômes, Combe de la Blanche and Caderolles, the Coume de Sencours and the forest of l’Ayré. Slopes covered with powder, the feeling of floating, the pure pleasure of the mountain: capture these magical moments!

Alone or with a guide?

As is the case everywhere, off-piste skiing in Grand Tourmalet requires extreme caution and strong skiing skills.

Do you have all the equipment you need? Do you know the best way to react in case of problems?

The high mountain is a hostile environment, and you need to be fully prepared for it. When you go off-piste without a guide, be aware of the dangers: you are going into an unsupervised ski area with no marked or laid-out routes.

Finally, the best way to enjoy these freeriding experiences is to go with a professional guide. And of course, in both cases, to get indepth information about the day’s weather conditions!

Few freeriding spots offer what the Pic du Midi has to offer: the peace and quiet of the high mountain and the big thrill of a unique technical off-piste descent, all with easy access thanks to the cable car! To make the most of it, book your freeriding descent at the Pic du Midi now.
