Caves and chasms in the Hautes Pyrénées
Having your head in the clouds and your feet on the ground is an adventure to experience.
From the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, the Pyrenees mountain range is dotted with a whole host of caves.
If your emotions run high when you gaze at the spectacular panoramic views of the valley, how about discovering a whole host of concretions, stalagmites, stalactites, helictites and other formations? Some caves were inhabited during the prehistoric era, like the Grottes de Labastide, others boast pure white lace-like aragonite, like the Gouffre d’Esparros, and finally, enthusiasts seeking underground adventures will love the Grottes de Médous complete with boat ride.
Prehistoric space of Labastide
This is the ideal place for a family outing. Providing information about prehistoric humans, cave paintings, hunting 15,000 years ago …
With plenty of activities including hunting with assegais, lighting and maintaining a fire, painting on stones and a zip line descent – you will be a prehistory buff when you leave.
The chasm of Esparros
Today thousands of visitors feast their eyes on the wonderful aragonites and other concretions of the Gouffre d’Esparros and will continue to do so for a long time to come.
This place is as beautiful as ever thanks to the implementation of ongoing environmental monitoring, in collaboration with the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) ensuring that the cave will be preserved for future generations.
