Discover the Pyrenees on snowshoes

Fancy escaping to the mountains ? Do you want to get lost in this immaculate vastness and discover the mountain differently? Whether you’re young or not so young, put on your snowshoes, grab your walking sticks, and forward march!

A fun and easy way to explore the Pyrenees mountains

The advantage of snowshoes is that all you need to know is how to put one foot in front of the other (and then do it all again!) to conquer the snow-capped mountain. From short walks to long-distance hikes, there is a snowshoe trek for everyone, no matter their level of experience. When you walk on untouched snow, you can forge your own path and go through places that are inaccessible the rest of the year: you feel like a pioneer! Take the time to look at the animal tracks and spot the winter flora: they show you the incredible wildlife of the mountains in winter. Smile, beauty is all around you!

Payolle and La Mongie: two excellent spots for snowshoeing

If you decide to go snowshoeing, there are two main sites available:

The Payolle “espace nordique” (Nordic area):

Access to the site is open and free with routes around the magnificent mountain lake and through forests of beech trees. You’ll soon see why Payolle is nicknamed “Little Canada”! A 15-km circuit is maintained on this site, snow conditions permitting.

From La Mongie resort,

Enjoy an introduction to snowshoe trekking on a one-hour discovery trail. Do you want to take it to the next level? Follow an instructor right up to the 4 Termes sector. One of the resort’s highest and therefore most breath-taking views awaits you. From there, you definitely have a bird’s-eye view of the situation!

With a guide, you have even more options!

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced hiker, setting off with a tour guide opens up even more opportunities! Snowshoe treks of all kinds are organised in Tourmalet-Pic du Midi, in La Mongie, the Vallée de Campan and, of course, Payolle. Safely get off the marked track, regardless of your level and experience of the mountain. Children aged 5 and older can join these merry expeditions where they’ll have fun while getting the chance to observe and appreciate the mountain environment.

Half-day

Outings offer a gentle trek, a breath of fresh air and fun for the whole family. Make the most of the dedicated snowshoe outings with a mission for your little trappers: spot animal tracks in the snow and maybe even build an igloo!

If you want to go further and higher, choose a day hike

which will take you away from the rest of the world, surrounded by vast expanses of untouched snow. Depending on the weather, you can have a bite to eat outside in the sunshine or in a barn. Either way, your picnic will taste like freedom!

Some of the mountain tour guides offer to take you for a moonlit snowshoe trek. Wandering under the stars on a snow-capped mountain is an unforgettable experience and a pure delight!

With snowshoes, the wide, open snow-covered spaces of the Pyrenees mountains are within your reach. There’s only one thing left to do: book your outing!
